✨ Inverted Sentences ✨
Grade 8 English Literature & Language
What is an Inverted Sentence? 🧐
Usually, our sentences are like a train with the engine at the front: Subject + Verb + Detail Phrases. It gets the job done and makes sense.
To make a sentence more exciting, a writer can move a descriptive phrase (like where something is located) to the very front of the sentence. When we move that detail to the front, the Subject and the Verb have to swap places!
Look at the difference:
- Standard Order: [The happy dog] (Subject) [slept] (Verb) [next to the fireplace] (Detail).
- Inverted Order: [Next to the fireplace], (Introductory Phrase) [the happy dog] (Subject) [slept] (Verb).
